What is Hemp?
A cultivar of the Cannabis sativa plant species, Hemp has been farmed for millennia and has an endless array of therapeutic, nutritional and industrial uses. Both Hemp and Marijuana are types of cannabis—Hemp refers to non-psychoactive varieties that contain 0.3% THC or less, while Marijuana is psychoactive and can contain up to 30% THC. Hemp has been grown in the Americas since the 1600s, and with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, it’s a federally legal crop once more.
What is Hemp used for?
Hemp plants are a dynamic and sustainable resource for countless goods and purposes. High in nutritional value, Hemp seeds are an energy-packed food, and Hemp fiber has been used throughout history for making fabric, rope and paper. Hemp extract—the oil harvested from the flowers, not the seeds—is commonly used in wellness products for its therapeutic properties. The Hemp crop is also an excellent purifier, often used to clear impurities from water and soil.
What is Hemp CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. It’s a major phytocannabinoid, meaning it occurs naturally in the plant, and accounts for a large percentage of the plant’s extract. Certified organic Hemp CBD is a primary therapeutic ingredient in our products, and is non-psychoactive compared to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which can cause psychoactive effects.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum and CBD Isolate.
Some scientists and CBD products focus on the benefits of isolated cannabis molecules. But nothing works alone in nature, and isolating CBD can limit its usefulness. In contrast, when CBD interacts with a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum (no THC) of cannabinoids, terpenes and phenolics, we often experience what’s known as the entourage effect. Absorbed together, the active ingredients provide greater physiological support by addressing the same needs in different ways, enhancing bioavailability and keeping CBD in the body longer.
We believe plant-based therapeutics are more effective when they stay as close as possible to the plant’s true nature, which is why we only use Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract in Windward products.
Full-spectrum CBD is commonly extracted using ethanol or CO2, whereas broad-spectrum and CBD isolate are hydrocarbon extracted—a process that typically uses toxic solvents like butane, hexane or propane.
For purity, safety and efficacy, Windward products contain certified organic Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract that is carefully separated from the plant using organic cane alcohol derived from non-GMO organic cane sugar.
