Why We Use Ashwagandha Root

Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that helps support mood, a healthy stress response, immune, hormone and cognitive health. Research has shown that extracts of Ashwagandha produce GABA-like activity, which may account for the herb's mental balancing effects. The adaptogenic effects of Ashwagandha are generally attributed to withanolides.

History of Ashwagandha Use | Windward

A Brief History

A member of the Solanaceae family, Ashwagandha is native to India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for nearly 5,000 years. It is a plump shrub with oval leaves, yellow flowers and bears a small red fruit, however, it is the root that is most often used in herbal preparations. In Sanskrit, Ashwagandha means "smell of the horse" because of its potential to impart the vigor and strength of a stallion. With its rejuvenating properties, this plant is both a tonic and an adaptogen.
